SFI Harvest cruise 30 May – 05 June 2023
My work as artist on boar of the SFI Harvest cruise was focused on documenting the work done by the scientist while collecting samples for further analysis, in order to understand and communicate the importance of the research they do for the long term monitoring of the arctic ecosystems, and to collect content for social media and visuals for scientific reports done by the scientist.
Aim of cruise:
The cruise was part of SFI Harvest, where UIT (University of Tromsø) research part (RA2 Ecosystem dynamics) to increase the understanding of ecology and distribution patterns of Calanus finmarchcus. The aim was to continue the monitoring along the Hola transect (1), for comparing with the Sinmod model (2) test the ability of a surface net to collect quantitative data and (3) investigate flow patterns of C. fin. into Vestfjorden and onto the LoVe shelf.
Procedures:
- Hola transect:
MVP transect through Hola through 3-4 stations along transect (shelf, shelf break, oceanic). At stations: CTD (chl a, nutrients), Multinet, WP2 for biomass (size fractionated)
- Surface net:
In study area with high abundance and low abundance, a surface net was deployed (Hydrobios mirocplastic net), preferably under cloud-free sky to compare with remote sensing data. In addition CTD and Multinet to compare surface abundance from net with Multinet. This testing of the surface net was done at the stations sampling took place.
- Investigate C. fin. flow patterns
MVP transect all the way from the coast south of Vestfjorden to oceanic areas. MVP transect across the entrance into Vestfjorden. Few stations in the area, focusing on shelf vs offshelf.
